Captain Dan & Major Sarah Nelson
The Nelsons served as Territorial Youth Secretaries for The Salvation Army, U.S.A. Southern Territory. Their office is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Their work is aimed at serving the needs of young people and resourcing the ministry of youth workers. They are passionate about sharing the Gospel and have a deep desire to develop others through intentional care and discipleship. As of June 17, they’ll take up their new appointments as Area Commanders of The Salvation Army in Knoxville and the surrounding area, which includes Sevierville and Maryville. Additionally, they’ll assume the roles of Corps Officers of the Knoxville Citadel Corps.
They have served in The Salvation Army as employees and as officers. Their previous ministry experiences took place in local corps (church) settings, as well as regional commands.
Dan was ordained and Commissioned a Salvation Army officer in 2008 and Sarah in 2004. Dan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Western Illinois University and a Master of Arts in Religion from Trevecca Nazarene University. Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministries from Trevecca Nazarene University and is presently working on a Master of Arts in Religion through Trevecca. She also graduated the Arrow Leadership Program in 2010.
The Nelsons have two children. Their daughter, Hannah will be a junior in college and their son, Nolan will begin middle school as a 6th grader. Dan’s hobbies include running and outdoor recreation. Sarah enjoys long walks, decorating, and cooking as little as possible. Together they love to travel and spend time with family.
